The Leader as Coach Programme

The ‘Leader as Coach’ - Synopsis:

“I can’t do this” - “I can’t do this” - “I can’t do this”

These three statements can sound the same if we are not paying attention; but they are in fact saying quite different things and would require different interventions. Is the individual describing a capability issue, a belief about their capability, a value they hold, or a lack of confidence? At the heart of good coaching, and indeed leadership, is the ability to quickly and effectively diagnose where the individual or team you are working with is stuck.

‘Leader as Coach’ is a three-day module aimed at senior managers and leaders in business. It will introduce the participants to a coaching approach to leadership and equip them with the necessary skills to become role models for the organisation. This programme is designed to challenge leaders to think differently; about their role, about the individuals they work with, and about themselves.

Day 1 will focus on the mindset of a coaching approach, Day 2 equipping participants with the core coaching tools and the theme for the final day is building confidence and capability. Alongside the core toolkit and a systemic approach to supporting and stimulating fresh thinking we will introduce participants to a simple and powerful diagnostic tool to help them to hone in on the ‘real’ issue – the cause rather than the effect.

Workshop Outline:

  • The core principles, pillars and philosophy that underpin high performance coaching
  • An overview of the Coaching Map - a framework for coaching conversations
  • The Core Coaching Toolkit:
    • The art of asking Questions
    • Learning to pay attention – moving beyond listening to being able to hear what is really being communicated
    • Goal setting – the building blocks for creating forward movement
    • Reflective Practice
  • A Systemic Approach – a tool to support and stimulate fresh thinking
  • Getting to the root cause - a diagnostic framework to pinpoint where the individual is ‘stuck’
  • Storytelling – scripts, legends and limiting beliefs
  • Change and Transition – ultimately coaching is about movement and change
  • Coaching Practice – coaching sessions to put into practice what is being learned with an opportunity to feedback and reflect on the learning
  • Observation and expert feedback

Our workshops are designed to engage with the full suite of learning styles. Coaching is a practical activity and as such the days are highly interactive and experiential in nature. We will introduce the core ideas of coaching and explore them at an intellectual level before getting the participants to try out coaching for themselves. We do not use role play in our teaching. We only use real play, encouraging participants to bring real life situations and dilemmas to the coaching practice. In this way they are able to experience for themselves sitting in the coachee’s chair what works and what doesn’t. We will create some reflection time to enable delegates to consider how best to integrate their learning into their day-to-day working life and personal style.

Workshop Outcomes:

  • Understanding and experience of the core coaching tools
  • Understanding of the philosophy and mindset that underpins the coaching approach
  • Able to diagnose where a coachee is ‘stuck’
  • Practical ‘hands on’ experience of having coaching conversations
  • Clarity on when to coach and when to use a different strategy
  • Beyond the formal to ‘coaching in the moment’
  • Participants will leave the module confident and capable of supporting individual and group change

...Ready to coach and champion a coaching approach!

The workshop is accompanied by a comprehensive workbook that can serve as a reminder of the tools and techniques taught on the module, case studies and a suggested reading list.
